MiniSplit Facts

Who makes your mini-split?

Most mini-split brands sold online don't build their own units: a factory builds them and the brand puts its name on the box. The certification records show it. When two systems are certified with exactly the same figures, to the decimal, at every test point, they are almost always one model sold under two names, and when one of those names is the factory's own, the factory is the maker. Of the 10 brands we have matched so far, 6 factories make up the list: AUX, Daikin, Gree, Midea, Mitsubishi Electric, TCL.

Certified by the factory itself

For these brands ENERGY STAR lists the factory as the certifier of record: the factory files the certification for the brand's units itself.

  • confirmed Daikin: Daikin. ENERGY STAR lists Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing, L.P. as the certifier of 56 of the 56 certified Daikin records: the factory certifies these units itself. the records ↗

Each count is the number of the series' ENERGY STAR certified systems whose certified ratings match a model the factory certifies itself. Open a system to see the two records side by side.

How we work it out

ENERGY STAR publishes every certified mini-split heat pump with nine figures from the Department of Energy's test procedure: cooling capacity; heating capacity at 47, 17 and 5 °F; SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2; the coefficient of performance at 5 °F; and the refrigerant. A brand that sells a factory's model under its own name normally certifies it with the factory's test results, so the figures come out identical. We compare every system we list against all of ENERGY STAR's records and keep the matches.

When the matching records include one the factory certifies under its own name (GD Midea, Gree, TCL, AUX, Hisense, Samsung, LG, Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric, for example), we name that factory as the likely maker. When records from two such factories match, we name neither. A brand that is a factory itself (Gree, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric) is shown as its own maker, from the certifier of record. Some certifiers list other factories' platforms as well (Kanion, UTL); they decide only when no major factory's record matches.

What the labels mean

  • confirmed The brand or the factory says so in its own material, or a certification record lists the factory as the certifier of that brand's units. The quote and the source are on the page.
  • inferred Worked out from identical certified ratings, as above. It says the same model is sold under two names. It doesn't say where it was assembled, and a brand can switch factories between generations, which is why we match system by system, not brand by brand.
  • reported A named reviewer, journalist or forum says so. We list these only with the source, and never above an inferred or confirmed claim.
